Match Recap
  • UNC Asheville was on the front foot early and had what looked to be a good attack brewing before they were whistled offside in the 10th minute.
  • Ben Goodman had the Eagles first chance on goal in the 18th minute.  The sophomore's shot from about 25 yards out sailed just over the bar.
  • Winthrop goalkeeper, Sam Jones was called into attack in the 20th minute and dove to the near post to make a save.  The rebound was shot over the bar and the match remained deadlocked.
  • Bryant Jimenez-Pearce smashed a free kick off the bar in the 27th minute.
  • The freshman made a fantastic run in the 38th minute, but a last-ditch tackle by a Bulldogs defender thwarted what would have surely been the opening goal.
  • The match's first goal came right before the halftime whistle. Jimenez-Pearce was there to try and turn home the cross, but the ball went off a UNC Asheville defender and right into the back of the net.
  • The home side found an equalizer within seconds of the restart whistle. A dangerous ball across the face of goal that Jones couldn't get across to keep out.
  • In the 65th minute, Jimenez-Pearce got his head on an in-swinger and forced an incredible save from Leon Musial.
  • After 88 minutes, both teams went down to 10 men.  After an earlier red for Bulldogs midfielder Conor Behan, Winthrop's Conor Stephens was sent off.
  • The match remained tied after 90 minutes.
  • In the 99th minute, Asheville scored the golden goal.  Colin Daughtry found the back of the net to end the match.

Notables
  • Winthrop has now scored first in two of their three matches this season.
  • George Orfanidis made his return to the Winthrop starting eleven.  The senior left back started 9 matches in the 2019 season.
  • Conor Stephens was sent off in the 88th minute after picking up his second yellow card of the match.  This was the first time the sophomore has been sent off in his collegiate career.
