ROCK HILL, SC – The Eagles shut down a late Mercer run to secure the 14-11 win over the Bears Saturday afternoon. This is the first of two meetings between these teams this season.
GAME RECAP
- Winthrop jumped on the Bears early and often, putting up six unanswered goals to take a 6-0 lead.
- Mercer's Hailey Rhatigan posted back-to-back goals to get the Bears on the board and cut Winthrop's lead to four, 6-2.
- Chloe Schaeffer scored a little over a minute later to chip away at Winthrop's 6-3 lead.
- Savanah Paton scored her fourth goal of the season at the 12:21 mark to take a 7-3 lead.
- McKenna Blick scored her third goal of the game with 11:14 remaining in the half to give Winthrop a strong 8-3 lead after 30 minutes of play.
- Mercer came storming back with two quick goals to open the half and make it an 8-5 contest.
- Lauren Morris sneaked in a goal with 24:17 remaining in the game before the Bears answered with three consecutive goals to come within one goal of tying things up, 9-8.
- McKenna Blick stayed hot, notching her fourth of the game to put the Eagles ahead, 10-8.
- Three unanswered goals for the Bears gave them their first lead of the contest with 9:26 remaining, 11-10.
- Four different Eagles would score in the remaining 8:28 to secure the 14-11 win.

- McKenna Blick had a game-high four goals and two assists.
- Kimora Bailey was a beast on the draw control, winning a game-high seven.
- Molly Dankowski caused three turnovers against her old squad, tied for most in the contest. She also tallied a goal and an assist in the win.
- Kelsey Johnson improves to 2-1 on the season, making three saves against the Bears.
- Both teams had four players record multiple goals; McKenna Blick (4), Bianca Tedesco (3), with Lauren Morris and Alyssa Angelo both scoring two. For Mercer, Chloe Schaeffer and Lily Morin led the way with three apiece, while Hailey Rhatigan and Shannon Urey each had two.

The Eagles will welcome Kennesaw State to Eagle Field Saturday, Mar. 6 at 1 p.m. The Eagles currently hold a 3-2 all-time lead over the Owls. These teams most recently met on Mar. 7, 2020, the last game of the shortened 2020 season, with Kennesaw winning that match, 13-9 at home.
