Winthrop Comeback Crumbles Against Coastal

Rock Hill, S.C. – Despite falling behind by multiple goals early, Winthrop lacrosse made it a tight game before eventually falling to Coastal Carolina, 13-9. It was the Eagles first loss to Chanticleers in program history snapping an eight-game unbeaten run in the matchup.
 
Game Recap
  • Coastal Carolina got on the board first when Megan Bozzi found the back of the net. 
  • Savanah Paton scored her second goal of the season to tie it up at 1-1.
  • The Chanticleers jumped back in front with a goal barrage.  Four straight Coastal goals put them out in front, 5-1.
  • Samantha Courtemanche single handedly outscored the Eagles in the first half scoring 4 goals. 
  • Lauren Asher and Lauren Morris were able to slash the Chanticleer lead, but Coastal took an 8-3 advantage into the half.
  • Alyssa Angelo, the Big South's reigning Freshman of the Week, got the Eagles on the board first in the second half.
  • Unlike the first half, the second stanza was much more back-and-forth with both teams trading goals.
  • After a pair of Winthrop goals (Lauren Morris and Savanah Paton), the Coastal lead was cut to two, 9-7.
  • Winthrop was never able to cut it closer, and the Chanticleers grabbed the 12-9 victory.
Notables
  • Samantha Courtemanche was involved early and often in the Chanticleer attack.  The graduate student scored 4 goals and had 2 assists.
  • Coastal Carolina dominated the draw.  The Chants won the draw control battle, 16-7.
  • Lauren Morris and Lauren Asher led the Eagles with 2 goals apiece.
  • Kelsey Johnson got the start in goal for Winthrop and made 11 saves.
  • Despite being outshot in the first half (16-7), the Eagles outshot Coastal in half number two (9-7).
  • Savanah Paton had a great day from free position. The sophomore converted 2 of her 3 opportunities.
