Eagles Fall 4-2 At South Carolina In Season Opener

Columbia, S.C.— Winthrop men's soccer opened the season with a 4-2 loss at South Carolina, Sunday afternoon.

Game Recap
  • Winthrop was on the board just 12 seconds into the game
  • Off the kickoff the Eagles played the ball back and then knocked it long toward the top of the box
  • Jonathan Foster chased it down and was able to beat two South Carolina defenders to the ball and as he crossed into box slotted a shot into the lower left corner
  • Gamecocks tied the game in the 16th minute off a corner as Logan Hitzeman placed a shot into the top right corner
  • Eagles nearly took back the lead in the 49th minute when Conor Stephens hit the crossbar
  • Gamecocks took a 2-1 lead in the 69th minute on a goal by Andrew Halloran
  • Halloran made it 3-1 in the 73rd minute as he collected a pass at the back post and fired a shot from just inside the box into the top right corner
  • Ben Goodman tried to get the Eagles within a goal in the 74th minute when his shot was on goal but stopped by Ryan Bilichuk
  • Holloran recorded his hat trick in the 82nd minute when Brian Banahan found him open in the box as he placed a shot into the lower left corner
  • Winthrop cut the deficit in half in the 86th when freshman Grayson Woodard scored his first collegiate goal
 
Notables
  • Winthrop is now 24-21 all-time in season openers and is 7-3 in the last 10
  • It is the third straight season the Eagles have had a freshman score in a season opener as Daniel Vicaria Barker did so in 2019 and both Alfie Rogers and Foster scored in the season opener in 2018
  • It was the first time since 2018 the Eagles have scored in the first minute of the game as Rogers scored 25 seconds into the 2018 season opener against Georgia Southwestern

Winthrop will open its home schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. when it takes on Wofford College.
