Lacrosse Set To Open Season At Eagle Field Against Presbyterian

ROCK HILL, SC – The Eagles will open the 2021 season at Eagle Field against Big South opponent, Presbyterian College. The contest is set to begin at 1 p.m.

WINTHROP AT A GLANCE
Winthrop is coming off a 0-7 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the remainder of the season. The Eagles welcome 16 newcomers; 16 freshman and junior transfer from Mercer, Molly Dankowski. They return five starters this season.

Winthrop lacrosse had two veteran players earn Big South Preseason All-Conference honors.
Lauren Morris, a senior from Pickerington, OH, missed the shortened 2020 season with an injury and set to make her comeback in 2021. She played in all 18 games during the 2019 season and led the Eagles with 46 goals and 73 points. She earned preseason honors in 2020 and was named a First-Team selection in 2019.

Lauren Asher, a junior from Forest Hill, MD, started all seven games for the Eagles in 2020, opening the season with a career-high six goals against Old Dominion. The junior led the team with 13 ground balls and finished the season with 16 goals and three assists. Asher was an All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2019.

The Eagles were ranked third in the Big South preseason poll and are led by Julika Blankenship who was named head coach in June 2016.

SCOUTING PRESBYTERIAN
The Presbyterian Blue Hose posted a 2-5 overall record before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the remainder of the season.

PC returns senior Sarah Marshall, who led the team in 2020 with 18 goals. Kara DiClemente (14), Madison Berg (11) and Abby Edmisten (10) also finished the shortened season with double-figure goals. Edmisten led the team with 16 draw controls and picked up 18 ground balls. Ana Boothe and Kelly Hyman are veterans who are also expected to be key contributors for the Blue Hose this season.

They team welcomes four freshman to the squad and returns six seniors.

Presbyterian was selected to finish 7th in the Big South preseason poll.
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST PRESBYTERIAN
Winthrop enters the 2021 season opener against the Blue Hose with a 9-0 all-time series lead. Last time these teams met on April 10, 2019, Winthrop left Clinton with a 17-4 victory.

WHAT'S UP NEXT
Winthrop will remain at home for its next contest. The Eagles will welcome Coastal Carolina to Eagle Field on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m.
