Miami, Fla— Winthrop softball earned a doubleheader split against Florida Atlantic with a 5-4 wins and 9-1 loss on day two of the Feldburg's Invitational.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Eagles scored first as Ansley Gilreath hammered a shot to left center to lead off the second inning
- Two batters later Lauren King walked and then stole second to get into scoring position
- Vianna Rodriguez and Chloe Baker drew back-to-back walks to load the bases
- Freshman Bailey Warren came through with a single to left that scored King
- FAU was fortunate to get out of the inning without allowing more as Ashley Westbrooks grounded into a double play to end the threat
- The Owls split the Winthrop lead in half in the bottom of the second as Sommer Baker came through with a two-out RBI single to right
- Two innings later the Eagles stretched their lead to 5-2 as King led off the fourth with a single up the middle
- Rodriquez drew another walk to put runners at first and second as FAU decided to change pitchers
- Winthrop continued its success offensively as Baker singled through the right side to load the bases
- Warren was plunked with the bases loaded, scoring King for a 3-1 lead
- With two outs, Macy McCall grounded out to first but an error on the play allowed Warren and Baker to score for a 5-1 lead
- FAU got one back in the sixth on an RBI single by Gretchen Ebert
- In the bottom of the seventh the Owls nearly rallied as Riley Ennis delivered a two-out, two-runsingle through the hole at first but Madyson Watson came in to close the door
- Aisha Weixlmann got the win in the circle after tossing 6.2 innings allowing four runs on 12 hits with no walks and seven strikeouts
WHAT HAPPENED
Game 2
- Owls struck first in the second thanks run scored on a wild pitch and an RBI groundout from Zoey Jones
- FAU doubled its lead in the third as Ennis doubled with one out and scored on a throwing error on a bunt single by Kaitlyn Cunningham followed by an RBI single by Maya Amm
- Ebert led off the fourth with a double and scored on a triple by Bailey Story for a 5-0 lead
- Winthrop got runners on in each of the first two innings but hit into a double plays
- McCall led off the seventh with a single and then moved to second when Taylor Charlton walked
- Charlton moved to second on a throwing error and McCall came around to score for the only run of the game
EXTRA BASES
- Gilreath moved into a tie for 4th all-time at Winthrop with 23 career homeruns after homering for the third straight game (game one of the DH)
- It's the first time an Eagle has homered in three straight games since Westbrooks did so Mar. 15-16 with three straight against Binghamton
- The last time the Eagles as a team had at least one homerun in the first three games of the season was 2013
- The win on Saturday gives head coach Windy Thees 448 career wins as she approaches the 450 win mark
- Eagles have now won five of the last seven games decided by two or fewer runs and are 6-3 in the last nine one-run games
