ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop stayed close early, but Charleston Southern gradually pulled away for the victory in the Big South Conference opener for both teams.

How it Happened
First Quarter | Winthrop got off to an excellent start as
Caroline De Klauman and
J'Mani Ingram made back-to-back layups for an early four-point lead. The Buccaneers countered with five points of their own, and the teams stayed close in the early going. A De Klauman layup tied the game at eight before another 5-0 run from the visitors gave Charleston Southern a lead they would never relinquish. Ingram got the Eagles within 13-12, but the Buccaneers went on an 8-0 run to end the quarter and seize control.
Second Quarter | The Eagles went on a 8-2 run capped off by a
Noble Tsumas three pointer, drawing within 23-20, but the Buccaneers pulled away as they went on a 13-0 run to end the half, heading into the locker room with a 16-point lead.
Third Quarter | Charleston Southern scored the first two baskets of the second half, expanding the lead to twenty points in the process. Winthrop closed within 45-31 on
Luka Malinka's jumper halfway through the third period and stayed within 14 points on Malinka's buzzer-beating three pointer to close the quarter.
Fourth Quarter |
Myra Strickland made a free throw to get the Eagles within 13 points early in the final period before the Buccaneers went on a 7-0 run, extending the lead back to 20 in the process. Winthrop continued to battle and was within 12 points with just under a minute to play before succumbing by 13 points.
