Eagles Fall To Duke In Season Opener

DURHAM, N.C. – Opening their season on the road against a highly touted Atlantic Coast Conference opponent, Winthrop was unable to gain much traction and fell to Duke 95-39 Tuesday evening inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Winthrop (0-1) | Duke (1-0)
Nov. 9, 2021 | Cameron Indoor Stadium

Duke 95, Winthrop 39

How it Happened
First Quarter | Duke started the game off with a three pointer and added a layup a short time later. Sydney Hunter then scored the first points of the year for Winthrop as she drilled a jumper to keep the Eagles within one possession. The Blue Devils responded with another layup, but J'Mani Ingram made a short jumper to keep the score close. The teams traded baskets once again with Antoaneta Alexe's layup making the score 9-6. Duke closed the quarter on a 14-point run to take a commanding 23-6 lead.

Second Quarter | Alexe opened the scoring in the second stanza with a layup, but the Blue Devils countered with a basket of their own. Myra Strickland then made the Eagles' first three pointer of the year before Duke held Winthrop scoreless for the next six minutes. During that time, the Blue Devils stretched their lead out to 39-11 before Caroline De Klauman scored the first five points of her Winthrop career to keep pace, although Duke took a 44-16 lead into the locker room.

Third Quarter | The lead stretched out to 50-16 early in the third quarter before an Ingram layup stopped the run. Ingram and Strickland combined for seven points to get Winthrop within 56-25. Duke went on a 10-0 run before a Luka Malinka and-one quickly ended the Blue Devil assault. However, Duke scored the last bucket of the quarter for a 68-28 lead.

Fourth Quarter | A Sydney Hunter and-one opened the quarter on a positive note for the Eagles. Although the home team continued to play well, Ingram scored three baskets in a row for Winthrop before an Ally Ross three pointer closed the visitor scoring. The Blue Devils scored the final seven points of the contest to provide the final margin.
