Good With Game-High 33 Points, 2nd Half Rally Falls Short At Washington State

Pullman, Wash. – Patrick Good hit 11 threes and scored a game-high 33 points but Winthrop couldn't overcome a 24-point deficit in a 92-86 loss at Washington State, Monday night in non-conference men's basketball action.

FIRST HALF
  • Both teams got off to a shaky start as the Eagles trailed 5-3 just under four minutes into the game
  • Cougars used a 9-0 run started by a step back three from Noah Williams for a 14-3 lead with 14:07 left
  • Kelton Talford ended the run with a score off a baseline drive, but the Cougars continued to gel on offense scoring seven straight for a 21-5 lead
  • D.J. Burns Jr. scored four straight points to get the deficit down to 12 but another big run (14-3) by the Cougars had them on top by 23 (35-12 lead) with 5:30 left in the half
  • The Eagles cut into the lead with an 12-2 run to trail 37-24 with 2:44 remaining
  • Tyrell Roberts put an end to the run with a step back three to push the lead back to 16
  • The Eagles got off to a sluggish start shooting the ball, opening the game 1-for-8 and eventually 5-of-21
  • Winthrop did finish the half making 7-of-10 over the final 5:10, but the Cougars were 5-of-7 in that span including their final four shots capped off by a three at the buzzer by Michael Flowers for a 47-28 lead at the break

SECOND HALF
  • Patrick Good opened the second half scoring with a three to make it a 16 point game
  • Good scored the first 15 points of the second half for the Eagles as he was 5-for-5 behind the arc
  • That streak was ended when Micheal Anumba buried a corner three set up on a pass from Good
  • Winthrop's first seven baskets of the second half were from three until Burns Jr. scored after an offensive board on a short jumper
  • Despite Winthrop shooting better in the second half the Cougars continued to shoot well, not allowing the Eagles to chip away at the deficit
  • The Eagles did get the lead down to 12 points with 6:39 to play as Anumba scored the final five points of a 7-0 run (all at the foul line)
  • Good's ninth three of the game pulled the Eagles within 11 points with just a little over six minutes remaining
  • The Eagles got the deficit to single-digits with 3:11 remaining after a Chase Claxton layup
  • It was an eight point game with 2:42 left after Russell Jones Jr. scored off a drive, but the Cougars came right back with a D.J. Rodman layup
  • Rodman's layup was the first field goal in a span of 9:19
  • Jones Jr. buried a straight away three to make it a seven point contest at 78-71 with 1:59 left
  • The Eagles got within seven points on two more occasions, but couldn't get closer until 12 seconds left in the game when Good hit his 11th triple to pull within five points

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles connected on 13 three-pointers in the second half alone and finished the game 16-for-30 (53%)
  • Winthrop shot 53 percent from the floor in the second half and finished at 46 percent for the game
  • The Cougars finished the game shooting 52 percent
  • Washington State was 28-of-37 at the foul line while the Eagles were 10-for-14
  • Eagles had 14 second chance points in the second half and held a 16-10 edge for the game
  • Good hit nine of his 11 threes in the second half alone
  • For the second time this season, Winthrop's bench contributed over 50 points finishing with 56

NOTABLES
  • Good is the first Eagle to hit at least 10 threes in a game since Keon Johnson hit 10 in a win over Charleston Southern on Jan. 27, 2016
  • Good tied his career-best of 11 threes in a game, which he previously did Jan. 26, 2019 at Western Carolina
  • The 11 threes are one shy of tying the program's single-game record of 12 held by Michael Jenkins and David McMahan
  • It is just the second time a non-conference opponent has made 10 threes in a single-game against a PAC-12 school (Marshall Henderson fore Ole Miss against Oregon on 12/8/13 is the other)
  • The 33 points were two shy of Good's career-high of 35 which he posted at Western Carolina
  • The 11 threes were the most ever allowed by the Cougars to a single player in any game
  • Winthrop's 16 threes were the most made in a single-game against an opponent from a Power 5 conference with the previous mark of 15 set on Dec. 4, 2006
  • The 58 points in the second half were the most against a non-conference D1 opponent in a second half since posting 57 at Alabama State Dec. 16, 2017
