Eagles Fall To USC Upstate In Four Sets

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - USC Upstate took an early lead Friday evening and rarely looked back, as the Spartans went on to defeat Winthrop 3-1. The loss is Winthrop's first in conference play and snaps a five-match winning streak.

How it Happened
Set 1 | The Spartans took an early 3-0 lead, but the Eagles battled back with six consecutive points. Winthrop kept a slim lead until USC Upstate tied the match at 12 and went on to take a 13-12 lead. The set see-sawed back and forth until, with the teams tied at 21, the Spartans won four of the last five points to take the opening stanza.

Set 2 | Once again, Winthrop won the first two points of the set, but the Spartans countered with two of their own. With the Eagles leading 8-6, USC Upstate won three consecutive points to take the lead and never trailed again. Winthrop was within one point on several occasions, and made it interesting at 19-18, but the Spartans slammed the door shut and won their second consecutive set by a 25-22 score.
 
Set 3 | Flipping the script, the Spartans took an early 5-2 lead in the third set, but it wouldn't last for long. Winthrop tied the match at 10 and kept things close the rest of the way, eventually taking a 20-17 lead and holding steady from there as Alayna Jansky hammered down the deciding kill.

Set 4 | The Spartans took an early lead once again; this time, the Eagles were unable to overcome it. Although Winthrop led 7-4, 10-7, and 12-8, USC Upstate won five consecutive points to take a 13-12 lead and never trailed again. The Eagles tied the match at 20, but the Spartans won five of the last six points to close out the match.
