Jimenez-Pearce Lifts Eagles Over Highlanders In Double Overtime

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop overcame a two-goal deficit in the final minutes of regulation to capture a 3-2 overtime victory over Radford Saturday evening after Bryant Jimenez-Pearce netted the golden goal in the 103rd minute.

Game Recap
  • Radford struck in the first minute as the Eagles turned the ball over in the back just outside the 18 as Yoshiya Okawa stole the ball, took a dribble and then curled a shot into the top left corner
  • Eagles had a great chance to even the match in the 5th minute when Conor Stephens throw-in to Ethan Stevenson turned to a 1v1 with the keeper and tried to beat him to the corner but Joseba Incera made the save
  • In the 12th minute the Highlanders were awarded a free kick from about 25 yards out and Okawa stepped up curled a shot around the wall and into the lower right corner for his second goal
  • Despite a couple of other good scoring opportunities the Eagles trailed 2-0 at the break
  • Winthrop continued to press forward in the second half creating chances but just unable to break through until the 86th minute
  • Ben Goodman was brought down inside the box and the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick as Bryant Jimenez-Pearce converted
  • Then with 19 seconds to play in the game the Eagles went up a man when a red card on a second yellow was issued to a Radford player in the Winthrop defensive third
  • When the whistle blew, Sam Jones played the Taeyoon Oh around midfield and he launched a ball into the box
  • Incera came out of his goal area and punched the ball back toward the top of the 18 as Jimenez-Pearce headed it back toward goal
  • After a couple of bounces the ball found its way to the ground and Conor Stephens ripped a shot that was turned away by Incera but then Brigham Larsen was there to put the rebound into the back of the net with three seconds remaining in regulation
  • After a scoreless first overtime the Eagles were on the offensive just seconds in to the second overtime period
  • Oh knocked a long ball that sailed over the top of the last Radford defender as Larsen chased it down and beat the keeper to the ball about 35 yards out from goal and headed it over him but was taken out in the process
  • Another red card was issued and then the Eagles continued to apply pressure with Radford down to nine players
  • The free kick that was resulted from the play was taken by Jimenez-Pearce and the new keeper Joseph England made a diving save
  • The Eagles earned a couple more corners and on the third one Jimenez-Pearce curled a ball toward the back post that went over the crowd of players and the keeper as it bent into the back post side netting for the golden goal 

Notables
  • This was the third overtime victory for the Eagles this season
  • In all three overtimes the Eagles scored in the final 10 minutes to force overtime
  • With the victory, the Eagles move into 3rd place in the conference standings
  • Jimenez-Pearce netted his second golden goal of the season
  • Eagles had a season-high 26 shots (13 on goal) and had an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks

Winthrop completes is regular season schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 3 when it travels to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m..
