Boiling Springs, N.C. – Winthrop closed out the regular season with a 5-4 overtime loss at Gardner-Webb, Wednesday evening in Big South Conference men's soccer action.

Game Recap
- Brigham Larsen had a good chance in the 8th minute as he dribbled in on goal but couldn't get a lot of pace on the shot as it went right at the keeper
- The Runnin' Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 14th minute as Odal Brown dribbled his way into the box and as he neared the end line slipped a ball across the mouth to an open Owen Zaldivar who placed the ball into the net
- In the 16th minute, Chris Cushing played a ball at the top of the box over the back line as Grayson Woodard ran on but couldn't turn on the ball enough and his shot from near the corner of the six was high and wide
- Gardner-Webb doubled its lead in the 22nd minute when Abel Gebrekiros dribbled into the box and served a ball on the ground as Ryan Madando made a run near post and flicked the ball past Sam Bell
- Eagles broke through in the 33rd minute when Taeyoon Oh played a ball toward the top of the box as Larsen chested it back to Ethan Stevenson
- Stevenson took a dribble to his left and then slipped a ball through the defense as Larsen ran on and finish first time for his ninth goal of the year
- Early in the second half the Eagles received two great defensive plays as Gebrekiros dribbled by Sam Bell but as he shot the ball Preston Floyd slid in front to block it
- Gebrekiros got the rebound and put another shot on goal that was deflected off the line and wide by Conor Stephens to keep it a one goal game
- Sean Green brought the Eagles level in the 60th minute as Jonathanac served a ball into the box as Larsen ran on and looked as if he was going to head it but couldn't quite reach as he went by the keeper and Green ran on for the header into the open net
- Gardner-Webb caught a break in the 64th minute as Madondo collected a ball at the edge of the box on a back flick from Aymane Sordo, then dribbled and as he entered the box let a shot go as Floyd stuck his foot in front and the ball redirected to the lower left corner as Floyd attempted the tackle
- Winthrop tied the match in the 69th minute when Stephens played a ball into the box at the back post and a defender tried to clear it away but shanked it into the net for a 3-3 tie
- Larsen put the Eagles in front 4-3 in the 72nd goal as he headed a Jayden Mace cross into the net as the keeper came out to challenge it
- Runnin' Bulldogs made it 4-4 in the 80th minute off a set piece as Sebastian Reventlow served the ball into the box about 10 yards in front of goal from 45 yards out as Madondo got under it and headed the ball into the upper left corner
- Madondo won the game a minute and 10 seconds into overtime as he was open in front of goal off a corner kick and buried the free header for his fourth goal of the game

- This was the first overtime loss of the season for the Eagles
- Gardner-Webb had a 17-9 advantage in shots and 10-6 in shots on goal
- Larsen now has nine goals on the year, which are the most by a Winthrop freshman Daniel Revivo had 10 in 2005
Looking Ahead
Winthrop finished the Top 4 of the Big South Conference standings, but awaits its seeding for the conference tournament as Radford and Longwood meet on Thursday, Nov. 4. The Eagles will host a quarterfinal match on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. with the opponent to be determined.
