Oct. 29, 2021 | Winthrop Coliseum
Winthrop 3, UNC Asheville 0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-12)
How it Happened
Set 1 | Winthrop took the first point of the match and went on to take an early five point lead at 7-2. Although it looked like the Eagles would cruise through the set, the Bulldogs won eight of the next ten points to take a slim 10-9 lead. Winthrop won three consecutive points to seize the lead back, but Asheville simply would not go away. With the Bulldogs leading 18-17, the Eagles won seven consecutive points and went on to take the set 25-19.
Set 2 | The Eagles won the first four points of the second stanza and stretched the lead out to 10-3 on a
Morgan Bossler kill. Asheville won four points in a row to get back in the set, but Winthrop kept their foot on the gas, going on to lead 21-10. The teams traded points for the rest of the period, but the Eagles eventually cruised to a 25-14 win.
Â
Set 3 | Winthrop stormed out of the gate with five consecutive points to start the third set. Asheville won back-to-back points to stay in it, but the Eagles kept extending the lead, eventually leading 16-4. Leading 23-7, Winthrop allowed the Bulldogs to take five of the next seven points, but their huge cushion allowed for a 25-12 win and finished out the sweep.
