Eagles Fall At 13th-Ranked Virginia Tech Wednesday Night

Blacksburg, Va. – Winthrop men's soccer fell 3-0 at 13th-ranked Virginia Tech, Wednesday night in non-conference action.

Game Recap
  • Hokies grabbed the lead in the 31st minute when a ball sent into the box bounced a couple of times to the back post and Welnilton Da Silva Jr. turned a ripped a half volley into the left corner from about eight yards out
  • Bryant Jimenez-Pearce nearly equalized in the 41st minute when he curled a free kick just outside the box over the wall and into the lower left corner but Ben Martino just got a hand on it to force it wide on a diving save
  • Virginia Tech doubled its lead at 2-0 in the 59th minute when Nick Blacklock's corner kick was headed home into the right corner by Jacob Labovitz
  • Ben Goodman had a chance in the 75th minute but his shot was stopped by Martino
  • A minute later as Kyle McDowell served a ball to the back post that was collected by Andrew Weber who then laid it off to Conor Pugh who slammed it home

Notables
  • Hokies finished with a 14-7 advantage in shots and 7-4 in corners
  • Sam Bell finished with three saves while Martino finished with four
  • Eagles were shutout in back-to-back games for the first time this season
