Game Recap
- Upstate was awarded a penalty in the 9th minute of the match as Mario Arrocha stepped in and drilled a shot into the right corner
- In the 19th minute, the speed of Winthrop's forwards paid off as a through ball was chased down by Ethan Stevenson as he was headed to a one-on-one when he was brought down just outside the box as a red card was awarded
- On the free kick Bryant Jimenez-Pearce ripped a shot around the way that was turned away by Luca Bulfon
- In the 21st minute the Preston Floyd launched a long ball over the top of the defense as Stevenson ran on and headed it over the keeper as he came out to play the ball
- The ball was headed toward the open goal but an Upstate defender was able to chase it down and clear it before it bounced into the open frame
- Eagles came close to tying things up in the 37th minute when Suhong Jung's cross found Jonathan Foster in front for a header that went off the crossbar
- The rebound came right back to Foster as he took a touch and took a shot toward the lower left corner but Bulfon made a full extension dive to keep the Eagles off the board
- Just over a minute later the Eagles had another good chance as Foster ripped a shot to the lower left corner from the right of the keeper but Bulfon was down to make the save
- Eagles were caught on a counter late in the half as Filippo Censini knocked a long ball to Brody Williams who beat the defender and then slotted a shot past Sam Jones headed toward the right corner of the goal that deflected off a defender and into the net
- The shot from Williams was headed into the frame and was redirected only a couple yards off the line as the Eagle defense made an attempt to recover
- Upstate had momentum right out of halftime as it had a diving header off the post just a minute and five seconds into the second half
- Eagles finally broke through in the 68th minute when Ben Goodman crossed a ball in front that was flicked on by Tyler Hornsby as Brigham Larsen ran on…and the ball took a slight deflection as Larsen was able to slip the ball into the net as a defender and keeper tried to get in front of it
- Larsen tied the game in the 83rd minute when Jayden Mace drew a penalty
- Larsen's initial shot was saved but the rebound came right in front and he followed the shot to place the rebound in the open goal
- Winthrop caught one of the biggest breaks if not the biggest break of the season in the final seconds
- Upstate served a ball in the box from about 35 yards out straight on from goal that was misplayed when trying to clear and went off a Winthrop player, off the post and right to an Upstate player who shot the ball immediately into the net but the clock struck zero during his shot so the goal did not count
- Winthrop earned a free kick about 25-30 yards straight out from goal in the 98th minute as Bryant Jimenez-Pearce played a quick ball wide to Stevenson, who then served the ball right in front of goal as Foster ran on and headed the cross into the lower right corner for the golden goal
