Eagles Sweep Buccaneers With 53-48 Win Saturday Afternoon

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop women's basketball secured the season sweep over Charleston Southern with a 53-48 victory Saturday afternoon. Myra Strickland, who had a team-high 18 points, and Tori Hall who recorded 13 points of her own, a new career-high, combined for 7-of-12 from deep to give the Eagles the offensive spark they needed to win their third straight contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
FIRST QUARTER 
  • Winthrop opened the contest with a 7-2 run
  • Alyssia Faye got the scoring started for the Bucs with a layup at the 8:22 mark
  • Sharita Godfrey tied the contest at 11 with 1:45 remaining with two made free throws
  • Tori Hall's first 3-pointer of the contest gave the Eagles a 14-11 lead with under a minute to play
  • Anika Riley hit a jumper right before time expired to give the home team a five-point edge after 10 minutes of play, 16-11
SECOND QUARTER 
  • The Eagles cooled down in the second quarter, being held to just nine points, shooting 33 percent from the field
  • Nine of their 10 first half turnovers came in the second quarter
  • Both teams turned the ball over on consecutive possessions before Tori Hall knocked down a corner three to extend Winthrop's lead to eight points
  • The Bucs were held scoreless until Jamya Rogers made a layup nearly three minutes into the quarter
  • Antoaneta Alexe was fouled on her basket, making the free throw, recording her 5th point of the afternoon, a new career-high
  • The Bucs closed out the half with a 7-2 run, making it a one-possession game going into the locker room at halftime, 25-22.
THIRD QUARTER
  • Sydney Hunter opened the scoring in the second half, extending Winthrop's lead, 27-22
  • CSU recorded its first points of the quarter off two made free throws by Makenna Winans
  • Myra Strickland kick started a 9-2 run with back-to-back 3-pointers
  • Tori Hall followed up on the next possession with a shot from deep of her own to give Winthrop its first double-digit lead of the contest, 36-26
  • The Eagles held CSU to single-digits in the third quarter of play, eight, with Alyssia Faye contributing half of those
  • The teams exchanged baskets to close out the quarter with Winthrop taking a 41-30 lead into the final 10 minutes of play
FOURTH QUARTER
  • The Eagles opened the last 10 minutes of play with a 6-0 run.
  • With 7:41 remaining, Tori Hall stripped the ball away from Janaia Fargo, making the layup and giving Winthrop a commanding 17-point lead.
  • An 11-4 run in the final four and a half minutes of play, including a layup by Sha'mya Leigh at the buzzer, brought CSU back within arm's reach but wasn't enough for the win.
  • The Eagles win, 53-48, extending their win streak to three games. 

THE NUMBERS
  • Winthrop was out rebounded by the Bucs today, 35-31
  • Both teams committed 20 turnovers
  • The Eagles scored 22 points off Charleston Southern turnovers, while the Bucs scored 16 points off Winthrop turnovers
  • 25 of Winthrop's 53 points came off the bench, led by Tori Hall who contributed 13 points, a new career-best
  • The Eagles finished the contest shooting 40 percent from the field, 39 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the free throw line
  • Charleston Southern finished the contest shooting 35 percent from the field, just 25 percent from deep and 79 percent from the charity stripe.
  • Along with Tori Hall's career-high 13 points, Antoaneta Alexe chipped in five points, the most for her this season

UP NEXT
The Eagles will travel to Boiling Springs to take on the Runnin' Bulldogs on Feb. 5 and 6.  Winthrop dropped both games to Gardner-Webb in 2019-20, falling 71-59 in Game 1 and 54-49 in Game 2. The Runnin' Bulldogs have secured a win in nine of the last 10 matchups and hold a 21-10 all-time record lead.
