Ingram, Hunter Record Career-Highs In Loss To Longwood Saturday Night, 80-73

FARMVILLE, V.A. – Five Eagles record 10 or more points in Winthrop's 80-73 loss to Longwood Saturday night. Madison Ervin led the team with a season-high 14 points, while J'Mani Ingram and Sydney Hunter both recorded new career-highs with 12 and 10 points respectively. Winthrop women's basketball is now 2-9 overall with a 1-7 mark in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
FIRST QUARTER
  • Longwood took a 2-0 lead off made free throws at the hands of Kyla McMakin before the game tipped off due to a technical foul given to Winthrop.
  • Maleeah Langstaff got the Eagles on the board with two made free throws of her own
  • Sydney Hunter grabbed a rebound and made a layup at the 8:23 mark to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead, their first of the game and series
  • Sierra Hunter made it a one-point game with 36 seconds remaining in the quarter
  • With eight seconds on the clock, Myra Strickland was fouled on a made free throw. She made her shot from the charity stripe to keep it a one-point contest
  • The quarter ended with Longwood leading 21-20
SECOND QUARTER
  • Adriana Shipp opened the scoring in the second quarter with her first basket of the night less than a minute into the action
  • The Eagles and Lancers were both held scoreless from the 6:34 mark until there was 4:43 on the clock when Anne-Hamilton Leroy drained a 3-pointer to make it a five-point game in favor of Longwood, 30-25.
  • Myra Strickland made back-to-back free throws with 2:16 remaining in the half to cut Longwood's lead to just one point, 34-33.
  • The Lancers took a 40-37 lead into the locker room at halftime. 
  • Both teams had their struggled in the first half. Winthrop committed 9 first-half turnovers which resulted in 11 points for the Lancers, while Longwood struggled on the boards, getting outrebounded 21-12.  
THIRD QUARTER
  • The Eagles were held to just 5-of-12 in the third quarter, shooting 41.7 percent, their lowest percentage of the night and put up 15 points.
  • Kyla McMakin hit a jumper 30 seconds into the second half of play to kick start the scoring
  • Anika Riley responded with a layup of her own
  • A 5-0 run for the home team put the Lancers up nine, 49-40
  • Anika Riley made a layup with 5 seconds on the clock to make it a 7-point deficit with 10 minutes to play
  • Tori Hall blocked a Allysah Boothe 3-pointer as time expired 
FOURTH QUARTER
  • The Lancers opened the last 10 minutes of play with a 6-2 run.
  • Madison Ervin snapped their streak with a shot from behind the arc to make it a 65-57 game.
  • Winthrop went 3-of-6 from behind the arc, scoring a game-high 21 points in the quarter
  • Sydney Hunter recorded her 10th point of the night at the 6:34 mark- a new career-high
  • Longwood took a 13-point lead off two made free throws from Tra'dayja Smith, its largest lead of the game with 4:32 to play
  • With 2:39 remaining in the game, freshman J'Mani Ingram recorded her 12th point of the contest - a new career-best
  • Madison Ervin hit a 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining in the game but Longwood's seven-point lead was enough for the 80-73 win.
  • The Eagles made 4-of-4 attempts to close out the contest

THE NUMBERS
  • Winthrop once again outrebounded Longwood, 35-28
  • The Eagles committed twice as many turnovers as the Lancers, 16-8
  • The Lancers recorded 20 points off Winthrop turnovers, while the Eagles had nine points off Longwood turnovers
  • The Eagles ended the contest shooting 51.9 percent from the field, 38.5 from behind the arc and 73.7 percent from the charity stripe
  • The Lancers finished the game shooting 43.5 percent from the field, nearly perfect from the line, 94.7 percent, and 40 percent from 3-point range
  • Winthrop's bench put up 18 points, 12 from J'Mani Ingram
  • Longwood's bench recorded 21 points with Adriana Shipp contributing 10 of those points
  • Winthrop's 20 first-quarter points tied its season-high for the first 10 minutes of play. The Eagles also put up 20 first-quarter points against the College of Charleston
  • After Saturday's contest, Anika Riley needs just 6 rebounds to take sole possession of 10th most rebounds in program history
  • With four assists in Saturday's game, Maleeah Langstaff needs 15 assists to reach the 100-career assists milestone

UP NEXT
The Eagles will head to Hampton, V.A. next for a series with the Pirates on January 22 and 23. Tip-off on Friday is set for 5 p.m., while tip-off on Saturday is set for 6 p.m. Fans can catch all the action on ESPN+. Winthrop opened Big South Conference play last season with a 72-66 home win over the Pirates, with four Eagles scoring in double-figures. On February 11, these teams met one last time for the 2019-20 season and the Eagles fell to the Pirates, 62-48, on the road. Hampton leads the all-time series 3-1.
