Washington, D.C.— Winthrop scored 15 runs on 14 hits as it picked up two wins on day two of the Bluff and Blue Challenge, Saturday afternoon. Winthrop opened the day with an 8-2 win over Monmouth and then defeated Rider 7-1.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Monmouth
- The teams were scoreless after three and a half innings when the Eagles offense came alive
- Eagles pushed across three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to open up the game
- Eagles got things going in the fourth with two outs as Madyson Watson delivered an RBI single to center with the bases loaded
- On the same play the center fielder had a fielding error that allowed Ansley Gilreath to come around and score for a 2-0 lead
- Taylor Charlton eventually scored on a passed ball for the three run advantage
- For the second consecutive inning Tori Walker singled to get the fifth inning going
- After she was sacrificed to second Ashley Westbrooks stepped up and pulled a 1-1 pitch down the line for a homerun
- In the sixth inning it was Westbrooks again as she singled to right center with runners at second and third to make it an 8-1 lead
- Watson tossed a complete game to earn the win in the circle as she allowed two runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts and is now 7-4
WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Rider
- Eagles jumped on Rider in the first inning as Tori Walker led off with a single and then Lauren King hit her second collegiate homerun with a shot down the line
- Winthrop took a 5-0 lead after three innings thanks to some patience at the plate
- The Eagles loaded the bases with two outs courtesy of three walks and then Watson walked on a pinch-hit appearance to score a run
- Walker followed with a walk for a second run and 4-0 lead and then Ellie Marks scored on a fielder's choice
- In the sixth inning the Eagles added some insurance as Westbrooks doubled down the left field line with one out and Gilreath followed with a shot to left for her third homerun of the season
- Aisha Weixlmann tossed a complete game allowing one run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts to improve to 4-1 on the year
EXTRA BASES
- Eagles have now won 4-of-5 games
- Gilreath extended her hitting streak to 13 games and is closing in on 80 career RBI
- Westbrooks and Gilreath became the 8th and 9th players in program history to reach 20 career homeruns
- Westbrooks had four RBI on the day and is now 7th all-time as she passes Lauren Hill with 111
