Eagles Fall To Clemson In 11 Innings

Box Score CLEMSON, SC - Clemson scored runs in the ninth and eleventh innings Wednesday to beat Winthrop 3-2 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, as the Tigers improved to 14-3 with the walk-off home win in eleven innings. Winthrop dropped to 11-4 on the season with the loss.

Macklin Ohs got the start for the Eagles and impressed throughout his outing. The junior right hander pitched into the sixth inning, giving the Eagles 5.1 innings of one run, three hit ball while striking out two and walking two. Ohs has now allowed only two runs through his last 8.0 innings pitched out of the bullpen.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles began the bullpen game by bringing on lefty specialist Aaron White with runners on first and second with one out. White struck out his man, and Tom Riginos then gave the ball to freshman right-hander Dalton Mims who escaped the jam by inducing a flyout to left field. Mims then came back out and pitched a clean seventh inning, picking up a strikeout in the process.

Jason Crumley came on for the bottom of the eighth inning and got four outs, getting the first out of the bottom of the ninth inning as well. Crumley retired all four batters he faced, inducing four groundouts. With the Eagles on top 2-1, Tom Riginos turned things over to closer Colten Rendon who yielded the game-tying run in the ninth inning, as a throwing error brought home Clemson's second run. The run was not charged as earned against Rendon. Rendon came back out for the bottom of the tenth and pitched a clean inning, picking up a strikeout in the process.

Freshman left-hander Garrett Gainey came out for the bottom of the eleventh inning and was tagged with the loss Wednesday as the rookie surrendered three hits in the eleventh, allowing the game-winning run on an RBI single into right field.

Offensively, Winthrop tied the game at one in the top of the fifth inning on a two-out RBI single into left field by Luke Hannum for the freshman's seventh RBI of the season. The second Winthrop run crossed in the top of the eighth without the Eagles recording a hit, as a walk and consecutive erorrs on bunt plays scored Tyler Baker from second base. The Eagles left the bases loaded in the eighth with an opportunity to add insurance, three of seven Eagle baserunners left on on Wednesday night.

UP NEXT: The Eagles welcome Prebyterian to the Winthrop Ballpark for a three game weekend series to begin Big South play. Friday's series opener is slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
