Birmingham, Ala.— Winthrop softball fell 3-1 to Eastern Illinois in its final game of the Samford Tournament, Sunday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
	- Eagles had a good chance to grab an early lead in the top of the second as Ansley Gilreath led off with a single to center and two batters later Logan Webb singled
- After Aisha Weixlmann popped up to the pitcher, A.G. Gardner hit a grounder to third that was fielded by Kendyl McKeough as she touched third base for the force out to end the threat
- Eastern Illinois struck first in the bottom of the third as Kayla Bear led off with a bunt single and then stole second
- Hannah Craves stood in and doubled to left for a 1-0 lead
- Mia Davis followed with a double to right center to double its lead at 2-0
- Haley Mitchell made it 3-0 as she followed Davis' double with a single to center
- Winthrop had a good chance to get back into the game in the fifth inning as Webb doubled to lead off
- Chloe Baker singled to right to put runners at the corners and no outs
- After Gardner struck out, Makayla Cyzick was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Tori Walker
- Walker delivered as she ripped a shot up the middle that was kept in the infield by shortstop Megan Burton, which may have prevented more than one run crossing the plate
- Taylor Charlton came in to pinch-hit as she laced a ball but right at the center fielder, who then threw home quickly to nail Baker at the plate for the inning-ending double play
- Bella Roy tossed 4.0 innings of relief allowing just three hits, walking two and striking out eight
EXTRA BASES
	- Roy recorded eight strikeouts on the day, pushing her season total to 14 in 9.1 innings
- Westbrooks extended her hitting streak to five games to start the season
- Gilreath's single in the second pushed her hitting streak to four straight
- Walker, Westbrooks and Gilreath have reached base in all five games

Winthrop is back in action next weekend as it will host a tournament Feb. 14-16. Eagles will open up on Friday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. against Eastern Kentucky and face Virginia at 5:30 p.m.
