Eagles Rally Against Campbell For 13th Straight Win

Rock Hill, S.C.— Four Eagles hit double-figures as Winthrop overcame an eight-point second half deficit in a 62-53 victory over Campbell, extending its win streak to 13 in a row.

FIRST HALF
  • Winthrop opened the game with an early 4-1 lead on buckets inside from Micheal Anumba and D.J. Burns Jr.
  • A Josh Ferguson three put the Eagles up 9-5 before Campbell tied the game at 9-9 with 15:33 left
  • Eagles responded with a 9-0 run over the next five and a half minutes behind two threes from Charles Falden and an emphatic dunk to cap it off by Ferguson
  • A Ricky Clemons layup ended the run as Campbell turned it up defensively
  • The Eagles led by nine points after a Burns Jr. jumper in the lane with 6:19 left but the Camels made a run to lead at the break
  • It started with a Jesus Carralero score off the dribble as the Camels outscored the Eagles 13-2 over the final 5:57
  • Trey Spencer gave Campbell a 26-24 lead with 22 seconds left with a three as the team finished the half shooting 50 percent
  • Winthrop shot just 29 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes
 
SECOND HALF
  • Carralero drained a three to start off the second half as Campbell scored the first five points for a 31-24 lead
  • Following a basket from Hunter Hale on the drive, Campbell's Cory Gensler drained a three to push the lead to eight points (34-26) with 17:16 left
  • Ferguson answered with a three that jump started an 8-0 run to tie the game at 34-34 with 14:47 remaining
  • Chase Claxton followed with a three point play and Burns Jr. tied it with a jumper from just outside the paint
  • Austin McCullough answered the run for Campbell with a corner three
  • Campbell led 43-37 with 10:30 to play as went on a run to take the lead on two free throws from Claxton
  • Cedric Henderson scored at the rim on back-to-back possession to put the Camels up three with 6:44 to play
  • From that point the Eagles outscored the Camels 18-6 to earn the nine point win
  • Hale followed Henderson's second consecutive bucket with a shot off glass on the drive and then with the game tied at 47-47 Anumba buried a corner three as Chandler Vaudrin found him open from under the basket
  • Winthrop shot 44 percent from the floor in the second half while holding Campbell to 33 percent, 1-of-12 in the final six minutes
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles shot 36 percent from the floor while Campbell shot 40 percent
  • Winthrop had a 41-35 edge on the boards (13 offensive rebounds)
  • Campbell managed 13 points off 10 Winthrop turnovers while the Eagles had just 12 points off 16 Campbell turnovers
  • Winthrop was just 5-of-21 behind the arc while Campbell finished 6-for-22
  • Claxton scored 10 of his team-high 12 points in the second half
  • Eagles had a stretch from the 16:15 mark of the first half until the 18:13 mark of the second half in which they were 6-for-32 shooting
  • Vaudrin finished the game with five points, eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals
 
NOTABLES
  • The win is the 13th straight for the Eagles, the third longest win streak in program history
  • Ferguson scored 10 points as he became the 26th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points (1,001)
  • Winthrop and Campbell are tied 22-22 in the all-time series as the Eagles have won eight of the last nine meetings
  • Eagles are now 28-3 in February home games under Pat Kelsey
  • The victory has Kelsey within four wins of tying Nield Gordon for second all-time in program history
  • As a program, the Eagles now have 297 league wins and are looking to be the first league school to reach 300
