Eagles Hold Off Longwood 70-68 On The Road To Extend Win Streak

Farmville, Va.— Winthrop men's basketball hung on for a 70-68 win at Longwood to earn a 14th consecutive win, Saturday afternoon at Willett Hall.

FIRST HALF
  • Hunter Hale opened the game with a three and the Eagles jumped out to an early 5-0 lead
  • A 10-2 run by Longwood capped off by a DeShaun Wade triple for a 10-7 lead
  • Kyle Zunic tied the game at 10-10 three minutes into the game
  • Over the next 11 minutes the team's went back-and-forth with seven lead changes and five ties
  • Eagles outscored the Lancers 14-0 over the final six minutes after a second-chance three from Juan Munoz
  • The run was capped off by a three as Hale drove to the free throw line and kicked the ball out to Micheal Anumba for a left wing three at the buzzer
  • Longwood was 0-for-5 from the floor with five turnovers in the final six minutes
  • Winthrop shot 54 percent from the floor while holding Longwood to 36 percent and led 40-27 at the break
  • Eagles dominated the glass 22-12, but did commit nine turnovers in the first 20 minutes
 
SECOND HALF
  • It was a rough start for the Eagles in the second half as Munoz hit a three to make it a 10 point game and then on the play there was a foul called underneath on Anumba to give Longwood another possession
  • Then there was a technical foul on the Eagles as Munoz made both free throws to make it an eight point advantage just a minute into the half
  • Eagles responded with four straight points as Chase Claxton hit two free throws followed by a Charles Falden drive and score to lead by 12 at 46-34 with 16:43 left
  • Longwood tried to cut into the lead over the next nine minutes but the Eagles withstood the pressure and led 60-50 with 7:44 to play after a Jamal King straight away three
  • After Chandler Vaudrin made 1-of-2 free throws with 7:07 to play, Longwood made a run to tie the game with 2:06 to play
  • The run began with back-to-back threes from Deshaun Smith and Munoz to make it a three-point game 5:49 remaining
  • Eagles answered as Vaudrin dribbled into the paint and dished off to Claxton for the slam and a 63-58 lead
  • Lorenzo Phillips scored off the drive to make it a three-point game and two free throws from Heru Bligen made it a one-point advantage for the Eagles at 63-62 with 4:07 left
  • Claxton found the Falden open on the right wing for three and a four point advantage only to have Longwood tie the game nearly two minutes later on a corner three from Jashaun Smith
  • The Lancers forced a turnover immediately as Bligen stole the ball and went the distance for the layup and a 68-66 lead with 2:02 to play
  • Falden tied the game at 68-68 with 1:46 left by knocking down two free throws
  • After Longwood missed on its ensuing possession, D.J. Burns Jr. was fouled and he made 1-of-2 free throws for a 69-68 lead with 1:12 left
  • Winthrop got a stop on the next possession and called timeout with 32 seconds left to set up a play
  • The ball went into Burns Jr. but his shot was off the mark and the shot clock expired, giving Longwood a chance to take the lead with 15 seconds remaining
  • Phillips drove to the baseline headed to the rim and Josh Ferguson blocked the shot
  • Claxton chased down the rebound with the ball heading out of bounds and tried to throw it off a Longwood player but the ball bounced back off Claxton with 9.7 seconds left
  • Winthrop forced turnover on the Longwood possession with 4.9 seconds left and was able to inbound the ball to Hale
  • Hale made 1-of-2 free throws for a 70-68 lead with 4.1 seconds to play
  • Longwood pushed the ball up the floor quickly, a pass came out wide to Sean Flood in front of the Lancers bench as he looked to shoot but Vaudrin jumped in front of him forcing a fake and a dribble as time expired and Flood didn't get the shot off in time
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles shot 49 percent for the game while holding Longwood to 40 percent
  • Eagles had a +12 advantage on the boards (40-28) and finished with nine offensive boards
  • Winthrop finished 7-of-19 from three while Longwood was 9-for-22
  • Falden scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half as he and Burns Jr. had a team-high 17
  • Eagles committed 19 turnovers (tying a season-high) that led to 17 points for the Lancers
  • Falden led the Eagles bench scoring as it contributed with 36 points
 
NOTABLES
  • Winthrop has now won 14 straight games and improve to 12-0 in the league
  • The win was the 90th conference win for Pat Kelsey as he's now three behind Scott Cherry for 5th all-time in league history
  • Kelsey also moved within three wins of Nield Gordon for second all-time in program history
  • It was the 8th win of the road for the Eagles, who are now 6-0 in league road games
  • This was the sixth straight win at Willett Hall for the Eagles

The Eagles will play their third game in five days when the host Radford on Monday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m.
