Lacrosse Falls To Mercer In Overtime, 16-15

MACON, G.A. – The Eagles lost a close battle to the Mercer Bears in overtime Saturday afternoon, 16-15.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop quickly took a 2-0 lead with goals from Olivia Deaver and McKenna Blick. Mercer responded with a goal of their own before Mia Creighton netted her first of the contest. The Bears then scored four consecutive goals to take a 5-3 lead with 14:57 on the clock. Savanah Paton and Mia Creighton chip away at Mercer's lead with back-to-back goals. The home team scored four unanswered goals to take a 9-5 lead at halftime. 42 seconds into the second half, Mercer's Eva Thorn nets a goal. In a span of 10 minutes, Winthrop goes on a seven goal run, taking a 12-10 lead. Four of the seven were at the hands of Creighton. The game is back-and-forth with Winthrop hanging on to a one goal lead with 3:54 on the clock. Mercer's Katie Martin would tie the game at 15 with 3:26 to play and later net the goal-winning goal with 1:57 on the clock in overtime.

  • Mia Creighton notched eight goals in the loss to Mercer – a new single-game career-high, her 20th of the season.
  • Savanah Paton and Lauren Asher recorded two goals each

The Eagles will return home to host Detroit Mercy on Thursday, March 4 at 4 p.m. These teams met once before in 2013, with the Eagles winning the contest 12-10.
