LYNCHBURG, V.A. – The Eagles fell to Liberty Wednesday evening, 17-9. Winthrop starts the season 0-4 for the second consecutive year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Flames took a quick 3-0 to open the contest. The Eagles responded with two goals on their own; one from
Lauren Asher at the 20:58 mark and another from
Olivia Deaver with 17:48 on the clock.
McKenna Blick scored her first of the contest to keep it a one goal game, 4-3. With 14:35 on the clock, Deaver notched her second of the game to tie things up at four all. Liberty scored three goals in the last 1:21 of the half to take a 9-5 lead after 30 minutes of action. The Flames didn't slow down after the break. They scored five unanswered goals to take a 14-5 lead.
Mia Creighton netted her first goal of the game to get the Eagles on the board in the second half. The home team recorded two additional goals before Deaver scored her third of the game, followed by a goal from
Savanah Paton. Blick scored her second of the game at the 8:14 mark to make the score 17-9. Both teams were held scoreless through the remainder of the contest.

The Eagles will travel to Macon, G.A. in search of their first win of 2020 to take on the Mercer Bears on Saturday afternoon. Winthrop and Mercer have met twice in history, with the Eagles winning both contests.
