Eagles Back In The Win Column With 63-60 Victory Tuesday Night

FARMVILLE, V.A. – Winthrop women's basketball completed the season sweep over Longwood with a 63-60 win on the road Tuesday night. The Eagles are now 11-15 overall with a 8-9 conference record with three games remaining in the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Longwood led 14-11 after 10 minutes of play, while both teams posted 13 points in the second quarter for the Lancers to hang on to their three point lead at halftime. Winthrop was unable to get stops but hung with the home team throughout the third quarter. The Lancers led by six with 10 minutes left in the contest. Myra Strickland sunk a much-needed 3-pointer with 55 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 60. Tra'dayja Smith missed a layup on the next possession, while Strickland missed a layup of her own, followed by a rebound and made layup from Kem Nwabudu to take the two-point lead with nine seconds to play. Longwood fouls Miquela Santoro, who made one of her two free throw attempts. With three seconds on the clock, Smith misses a game-tying 3-pointer to secure the win for the Eagles. Winthrop finished the contest shooting 33 percent from the field, 26 percent from 3-point range and 60 percent from the line.

Winthrop women's basketball will return home to host Radford on Saturday at 4 p.m. The last time the Eagles and Highlanders met, Winthrop was narrowly defeated, 54-53. Kem Nwabudu led the offensive efforts with 20 points, while Jah'Che Whitfield contributed 16 of her own. A high scoring third quarter erased a nine point deficit for the Eagles and made it a one point game with 10 to play. As time expired, Whitfield missed a 3-pointer that would've given the Eagles the win. Sydney Nunley recorded an 18-point, 13-rebound double-double in the win, with Khiana Johnson recording 15 points for Radford.
