ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop's comeback attempt just fell short on Tuesday night against Campbell, dropping the contest 61-58. The Eagles fall to 7-8 in conference, 10-14 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, behind four points from
Maleeah Langstaff. The Camels quickly responded with an 8-0 run of their own, taking the lead off a Kianna Speight 3-pointer. The Eagles were outscored 16-12 in the first quarter. Langstaff contributed six points. Svenia Nurenberg and Hayley Barber hit back-to-back 3-pointers to open the second quarter. With 5:37 remaining in the half, Speight hit a shot from behind the arc to give the Camels a 13-point lead, their largest of the night. Winthrop responded with a 9-0 run but Camel then scored six unanswered points to take a 36-26 lead at halftime. Winthrop narrowly outscored the Camels in the third quarter, posting 16 points to their 14 cutting their lead to single digits with 10 minutes to play. The Eagles battled back, going on a 6-0 run to make it a one possession game with a minute to play. Speight knocked down a free throw to make it a three point game. Whitfield's 3-point attempt with four seconds to go was no good.
