Lacrosse Drops Season Opener, 17-15

ROCK HILL, S.C.- Winthrop lacrosse dropped its season opener to Old Dominion, 17-15, on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
McKenna Blick quickly got the Eagles on the board with her first goal of the season at the 28:44 mark, with Lauren Asher and Mia Creighton notching a goal of their own at 26:38 and 26:02 respectively to give the home team a 3-0 lead. ODU's Glory Johnson got one back before Lauren Asher netted another goal. The Monarchs then scored three unanswered goals to tie the game at four a piece. The team's exchanged goals with ODU taking a 10-8 lead. Asher recorded her third goal of the game with 13 seconds on the clock. The Eagles trailed 10-9 at halftime.

Mia Creighton tied the game up at the 23:00 mark of the second half and after taking a timeout went on a 3-1 run to take a 14-11 lead. ODU scored a man-down goal with 8:28 remaining to regain momentum. Blick gave the Eagles another two-goal cushion, 15-13, before four unanswered goals from the Monarchs to win the game, 17-15.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Lauren Asher's six goals came on 10 shots, eight on goal, and is a new career-high in a game for the sophomore.
Winthrop finished with 33 shots, placing 26 on goal, while the Monarchs attempted 29 shots, placing 22 of those on goal.
 
UP NEXT
Winthrop lacrosse will host Fresno State in an 11 a.m. matchup on Monday at Eagle Field.  The Eagles and Bulldogs will meet for the third time with Winthrop holding a 2-0 series lead. These teams met for the first time on March 8, 2013 at Peter Barton Stadium in Denver, C.O., where the Eagles won, 17-10. On March 15, 2015, Winthrop traveled to Fresno, C.A. and left with a 17-6 victory.
