Eagles Fall To Hampton Tuesday Night, 62-48

HAMPTON, V.A. – Winthrop women's basketball fell to Hampton on Tuesday night, 62-48. The Eagles are now 10-12 overall, 7-6 in conference play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening 20 minutes of play was a close battle. Winthrop was outscored by just one point in the first quarter and trailed 30-29 at halftime. The Pirates came out of the locker room and scored a quick four points to take a 34-29 lead before Jah'Che Whitfield sank a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to just one possession. The teams exchanged baskets to keep the game close. Hampton's MaKayla Timmons hit a shot from behind the arc to put the Pirates up by five. With two seconds remaining in the quarter, Maleeah Langstaff hit a jumper to make it a three point game with 10 minutes to play. Hampton applied the pressure and held the Eagles to just eight points in the fourth quarter. Winthrop struggled to protect the ball in the final 10 minutes, turning the ball over 11 times. 15 of Hampton's 19 fourth-quarter points came off turnovers. A 9-2 run to end the game secured the win for the Pirates.

Winthrop women's basketball will take a trip to Asheville this weekend to take on the Bulldogs at Kimmel Arena. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. In their first meeting this season, the Eagles fell to the Bulldogs at home, 50-43. Jah'Che Whitfield led the Eagles with 15 points, while Myra Strickland contributed 14 of Winthrop's 16 bench points. The freshman finished 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Nadiria Evans notched a game-high 16 points, while Sonora Dengokl recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
