Charleston, S.C. – Winthrop women's basketball fell to the College of Charleston Tuesday night, 89-59. This was the Eagle's final non-conference matchup of the 2020-21 season.
Winthrop had an impressive first quarter, posting 20 points and taking a nine-point lead going into the second quarter. The Cougars came out hot, opening the second 10 minutes of play with a 14-0 run to set the tone for the remainder of the contest. The Eagles were held scoreless until the 5:36 mark of the second quarter when
Antoaneta Alexe was fouled and made both free throws. That was followed by another 12-2 Cougars run as a result of six Winthrop turnovers. The Eagles would turn the ball over 12 times that quarter and trail by 13 at halftime. The College of Charleston held Winthrop to just six points in the second quarter. With a commanding lead, the Cougars never let up, taking their largest lead of the night, 33, with five minutes remaining in the contest.
Maleeah Langstaff recorded a career-high 18 points, while
Madison Ervin went 4-of-4 from the free throw line and was responsible for all three of Winthrop's 3-pointers tonight for 13 points of her own.
Sierra Hunter bettered her career high in rebounds for the second time this season, leading the team with nine.

Winthrop women's basketball will return to the Winthrop Coliseum for the first time in nine months when they open Big South Conference play against USC Upstate on Saturday Dec. 17 and Sunday, Dec. 18. Both games are set to tip-off at 6 p.m. The last time these teams met was in the First Round of the Big South Conference Tournament on March 10, where the Spartans defeated the Eagles, 60-57, at the Coliseum.

Maleeah Langstaff led the offense with 13 and 10 points respectively. These teams met three times last season, with Upstate winning two of the three contests and holding a 4-3 all-time series lead.
