Eagles Open Big South Conference Play With Win Over Upstate Thursday Night

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop women's basketball kicked off Big South Conference action with a 59-54 win over USC Upstate at the Winthrop Coliseum on Thursday night. The Eagles were led by Myra Strickland, who finished with 17 points, her third double-digit game of the season and Sydney Hunter, who racked up a career-high 13 rebounds.

QUARTER 1
  • Maleeah Langstaff got the Eagles on the board with a basket 12 seconds into the contest, followed by a made layup from Sydney Hunter to give the home team a quick 4-0 lead.
  • The first quarter saw five lead changes and three ties
  • With three seconds remaining in the first quarter, freshman J'Mani Ingram was able to knock the ball away from Upstate and score to give the Eagles a 13-12  lead after 10 minutes of play
QUARTER 2
  • Winthrop was held to just nine second-quarter points
  • J'Mani Ingram scored four of Winthrop's nine second-quarter points in the first two possessions of the quarter.
  • An 11-1 run gave the Spartans a 26-22 lead at halftime
QUARTER 3
  • Myra Strickland opened the half with a quick six points on back-to-back-to-back possessions, ultimately tying the game at 28.
  • Michaela Gibbons hit a 3-pointer with 4:49 remaining in the quarter to cap off an 8-1 run that gave Upstate a seven point lead, its largest of the night.
  • With three seconds left on the clock, Maleeah Langstaff hit a clutch 3-pointer to make it a one possession game with 10 minutes to play.
QUARTER 4
  • Upstate's Dakota McCaughan hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 51 with 3:19 remaining in the contest.
  • McCaughan then turned the ball over and Anika Riley capitalized on her mistake with a layup to regain the lead
  • Winthrop ended the contest 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the last 37 seconds of play
  • Myra Strickland was sent to the line with four seconds remaining, hitting both free throws and securing the five point win. The sophomore finished the contest with 17 points and has recorded double-digit points in 3-of-4 games.  

 
THE NUMBERS

  • Sydney Hunter recorded a career-high 13 rebounds
  • The Eagles out-rebounded the Spartans 48-34
  • 25 of Winthrop's 59 points came off the bench
  • The Eagles & Spartans both had 23 turnovers in Thursdays contest
  • Winthrop went 21-of-58 from the field, shooting 36 percent
  • USC Upstate went 22-of-59 from the field, shooting 37 percent
  • Neither team was very efficient from the free throw line, with Winthrop shooting just 17 percent and Upstate finishing with 21 percent
  • Winthrop had 8 steals in tonight's game, with Maleeah Langstaff and Tori Hall each contributing two.
  • Winthrop scored 22 points off turnovers, while Upstate scored just 14.
