Eagles Drop Game 1 To Campbell, 69-41, Wednesday Afternoon

Buies Creek, N.C. – Winthrop women's basketball fell to Campbell, 69-41, Wednesday afternoon behind 10 points from Maleeah Langstaff and 11 rebounds from Sydney Hunter. The Eagles will have an opportunity to even the season series on Thursday afternoon, as these teams will tip-off one last time for the 2020-21 season at 2 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The Eagles got off to a slow start Wednesday in Buies Creek, being held to single digits in the first two quarters of play, five and seven respectively. Winthrop struggled to get into a groove, shooting 20 percent from the field and turning the ball over 15 times, resulting in 17 Campbell points. After 20 minutes of play, Campbell led 38-12. Maleeah Langstaff led the Eagles with five points, while Sydney Hunter contributed seven rebounds.
 
Winthrop quickly turned things around in the second half, opening the third quarter with a 6-0 run, making 6-of-10 shots. Campbell answered back, shooting 6-of-7 from behind the arc. The Eagles put up 18 third-quarter points, their most of the contest. Campbell put up 26 points in the third quarter and led by 34, its largest lead of the night. In the final 10 minutes of play, Winthrop held Campbell to just five points. The deficit was too large to comeback from and Campbell secured the 69-41 victory.
 
The Eagles finished the contest shooting 32.7 percent from the field, 16.7 percent from behind the arc and 50 percent from the line, while the Camels finished shooting 35.6 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from 3-point range and 62.5 percent from the line.

  • 15 of Winthrop's 23 turnovers came in the first half of the contest
  • Campbell turned the ball over just nine times, resulting in six Winthrop points

  • Winthrop was out-rebounded by Campbell, 45-43
  • Alexis Sykes checked in for her first bit of action as an Eagle, playing 15 minutes, scoring two points and contributing two rebounds and an assist.
 
UP NEXT
Winthrop will look to even the season series and earn its first win over Campbell since January 15, 2019 when these two teams tip-off at 2 p.m. on New Year's Eve at Gore Arena.
