Women's Basketball Falls To Campbell, 80-37

Buies Creek, N.C. – Winthrop women's basketball fell to the Camels Thursday afternoon, 80-37. The Eagles head into the New Year with a 2-5 overall record and a 1-3 mark in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Maleeah Langstaff and Anika Riley scored early in the contest to give Winthrop the 4-3 edge. The Camels responded with a 20-0 run, holding Winthrop scoreless since the 7:26 mark of the first quarter. The Eagles trailed 23-4 after 10 minutes of play. Winthrop got a big second quarter out of sophomore Sierra Hunter who scored seven of Winthrop's 13 points. At halftime, Winthrop trailed, 39-17. Campbell opened the second half of play on an 8-1 run, with five of those points coming at the hands of Luana Serranho. The Eagles were held to just eight fourth-quarter points, while Campell steadily took a 45-point lead, its largest of the contest. J'mani Ingram snapped the Camels 12-0 run with 34 seconds on the clock to make it an 80-37 contest. The 20-0 run in the first quarter proved to be too large of a deficit to come back from and the Eagles fell to the Camels, 80-37.

UP NEXT
Winthrop will return home on January 9 and 10 looking to snap its three-game losing streak when they host the High Point Panthers. The Eagles and Panthers split the season series in 2019-20 with Winthrop beating High Point, 69-63, on New Year's Eve
