Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles Earn First Win Of Season, 65-47, At South Carolina State Wednesday

Orangeburg, S.C. – Winthrop women's basketball earned its first win of the season with an 18-point victory over the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs on Wednesday evening. The final score was 65-47.

The Eagles got off to a slow start, going 4:42 into the game without a basket. Maleeah Langstaff's layup kick started a 15-7 to give Winthrop a five point edge after 10 minutes of play. South Carolina State's leading scorer, Heniaya Moton, drained a 3-pointer in the opening seconds of the second quarter but that excitement was short-lived as Winthrop's Tori Hall responded with a layup and 3-pointer of her own to give the Eagles a seven-point lead. While the game remained close in the first half, Winthrop held onto a 39-21 lead after 20 minutes of play. The Eagles began to pull away in the second half of the contest. The Eagles led by 12 twice during the third quarter and went on to take its largest lead of the night, 18 points, off a Sydney Hunter layup as time expired in the contest.  Graduate student Madison Ervin scored all 10 of her points in the second half of Wednesday's game. Seven of those 10 came in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Myra Strickland recorded another double-figure game, the second time this season and sixth in her career. This was career win 68 for interim head coach, Semeka Randall Lay, her first at the helm of the garnet and gold.
