Spartanburg S.C. – Winthrop women's basketball is back in the win column after a 52-38 win over USC Upstate on Thursday night. The Eagles improve to 6-7 on the season, 3-1 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jah'Che Whitfield got Winthrop on the board with a quick 3-pointer to open the scoring. Quadijah Moore tied the game at nine with just over three minutes to go. The Spartans were held scoreless through the remaining minutes, while the Eagles put up four more points to take a 13-9 lead. The second quarter was a back-and-forth battle where Winthrop just barely outscored the Spartans, 14-12.
Miquela Santoro drained her second 3-pointer of the night right out of a timeout to put the Eagles up 29-19 with 3:33 to go. Upstate responded with a layup but both teams were silenced offensively for the remaining 2:53 of the half. Winthrop had a six point edge after 20 minutes of play. The Eagles were able to hold Upstate to just eight third quarter points. Winthrop entered the final 10 minutes of play with a 40-29 lead. Santoro sank two free throws with under 30 seconds remaining in the game to secure the 14-point win, Winthrop's largest margin of victory this season. The Eagles finished the game shooting 34 percent from the field, 27 percent from behind the arc and 64 percent from the line.

The Eagles will return home after two road contests to host Presbyterian College at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Winthrop and PC met three times during the 2018-19 season, twice during the regular season and once in the Big South Conference tournament. Winthrop won both regular season meetings, the first at home, 55-52, and the second on the road, 62-54. When the teams met in Rock Hill for the first round of the Big South tournament, the Blue Hose advanced to the quarterfinals, beating the Eagles 64-52. This will be the first game of a doubleheader at the Winthrop Coliseum.
