ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop women's basketball erased a 17-point third quarter deficit to defeat Presbyterian on Saturday afternoon, 61-54. Winthrop improves to 7-7 overall and 4-1 in conference play. HOW IT HAPPENED
Jah'Che Whitfield opened the scoring with a 3-pointer to jump out to an early lead but the Blue Hose responded immediately with an 8-0 run. Winthrop had a tough time getting shots to fall but Maleeah Langstaff drained a shot from behind the arc and hit two free throws to gain a 9-8 edge over PC. A 9-1 run by the Blue Hose gave them a 17-10 lead after 10 minutes of play. Sydney Buckley and Kacie Hall exchanged 3-pointers to open the second quarter. Buckley hit a second 3-pointer before a 9-0 Blue Hose run. Hall hit another 3-pointer as time expired to take a 36-24 lead into the locker room at halftime. PC didn't slow down after the half; they opened the quarter with a 5-0 run to extend its lead, 41-24. Myra Strickland and Miquela Santoro responded with back-to-back triples to cut PC's lead to 11.  PC took its largest lead of the night – 17 – as the third quarter began but the Eagles came fighting back, outscoring PC 17 to 12 and trailing by single digits with 10 to play. The Eagles were down nine but chipped away at PC's lead to take a 51-50 lead off a Whitfield 3-pointer. Langstaff stole the ball and dished it in to go up by three points. With 4:27 remaining, PC's Tionna Carter made it a one point game but the Eagles responded with an 8-2 run to secure the come-from-behind win.
