Eagles Fall At High Point In League Opener Saturday Night

HIGH POINT, NC— High Point scored two late goals in the second half as Winthrop men's soccer fell 2-0 in its Big South Conference opener on the road Saturday night.

Game Recap
  • It was a pretty quiet first half until the final 15 minutes when the Panthers had a couple of near misses
  • The Panthers had four shots and two corners in the final 15 minutes of the half
  • High Point's pressure offensively continued in the early going of the second half as Ilias Kosmidis tested Sam Jones early but Jones made the save to keep the game scoreless
  • Jones was forced to make five saves in the first 20 minutes of the second half
  • High Point broke through in the 73rd minute when Jordan Lonchar found the back of the net off a pass from Alex Abril
  • The Panthers doubled their lead in the 78th minute as Ryan Inman scored his first of the season
  • Inman took a free kick just outside the box and his shot went over the wall, off the crossbar and then took a fortunate deflection off the back of Jones into the goal
  • Eagles nearly cut the deficit in half in the 83rd minute as Jordan Walshaw laid a ball off to Ben Goodman as his shot just missed wide right
 
Notables
  • Sam Jones made eight saves and has now made 18 in the last three games
  • High Point finished the game with a 23-4 advantage in shots and 12-1 on corners
  • Eagles have now dropped four straight Big South openers and are 20-15-1 all-time

Winthrop steps away from league play again during the week as it travels to Macon, GA for a 7 p.m. matchup with Mercer on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
