Game Recap
- Eagles were the first to generate an opportunity on the offensive end as Jordan Walshaw let one fly in the 9th minute but Paul Tyson made the save to keep the game scoreless in the early going
- Just over 30 minutes into the match the Eagles got some more offensive opportunities
- Cameron Thayer had a shot deflected over the line for a corner that led to a Thayer header off the free kick that just missed wide right of the post
- A few minutes later Jordan Walshaw had a shot blocked that led to a corner and just around 30 seconds later Leif Estevez got a shot on frame but Tyson made the save
- In the 41st minute, Aris Briggs broke through with the game's first goal as he put Georgia State on top before the half
- It was the 7th of the season for Briggs, who entered the week tied for the second most goals on the season with six
- In the first seven minutes of the second half it was all Winthrop
- Goodman fired a shot 18 seconds into the half that sailed high and a minute and a half later Marc Carreras had a shot blocked and over the line for a corner, the first of two corners in a span of 53 seconds
- Walshaw tested the keeper again in the 52nd minute but Tyson continued to keep the slate clean with a save
- The Eagles were unable to equalize and in the 61st minute the Panthers doubled their lead on a goal by Vic Pereyra-Zavala as he headed home a cross from Tristan Jumeau
- Less than five minutes later the Panthers made it 3-0 on a goal by Briggs
- The fourth goal came in the 80th minute as George Proctor netted his second of the season on a free kick
Notables
- Sam Jones made his first collegiate start Saturday evening as he's the third goalkeeper to start for the Eagles this season
- Jones finished with nine saves in the game as Georgia State had a 17-11 advantage in shots while the Eagles held a 5-4 edge in corners
Looking Ahead
Winthrop will be in action at home on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. when it hosts Colonial Athletic Association member College of Charleston.
