Volleyball Downs Appalachian State In Four Sets To Stay Perfect At Home

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop volleyball put on a show against Appalachian State and remained perfect while playing at home. The Eagles topped the Mountaineers in four sets (25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 25-21) to move to 8-3 on the season.

How it Happened
In set one, the Eagles used the energy from the home crowd to jump to a 14-9 lead. A balanced offense led by Camila Gomez's four set kills helped push the Eagles past the Mountaineers.

The Eagles gained a five-point lead in the second set but the Mountaineers came up with some big kills to tie the set, 19-19. Winthrop outscored App State 6-2 in the final stretch and came out with a 2-0 match lead. The Eagles had just two attacking errors in the set and finished with a .364 team hitting percentage.

The visiting team jumped out on the Eagles early in the third set to avoid the sweep. The Eagles came back to notch the set 12-12, but played from behind through the end.

The Mountaineers jumped out again early in the fourth set and made the chances of a fifth set look more and more likely. The fourth set saw four ties but just one lead change as the Eagles responded well and stormed back to reclaim the lead. Offensive power and key kills from Emily Wunder helped the Eagles get the job done.
