ROCK HILL, SC - Winners of their last two matches, Winthrop women's soccer will begin Big South play Saturday night as they visit the Radford Highlanders for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Cupp Stadium. Winthrop is 2-3 overall on the season and comes off a 1-0 win against East Tennessee State on Sunday night at Eagle Field.
Radford enters 2019 looking to defend its title as Big South champion. The Highlanders went 16-3-1 in 2018, including a 9-1 mark in conference play. Top-seeded Radford won the 2018 Big South Tournament with a 1-0 win over second-seeded Gardner Webb in the title game, advancing to the NCAA Tournament where they would fall 6-0 to then #8 West Virginia. In 2019, Radford is on top of the Big South Conference with a 6-2 mark on the year, most recently losing 1-0 at Western Carolina on Sunday night.
Winthrop's two players to watch in Saturday's match are seniors
Keeley Leising and
Allie Thomas. Leising was named this week's Big South Defensive Player of the Week after recording four assists in two matches, giving her seven total on the season. Leising was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week for her efforts.
Allie Thomas has scored three times in her last two matches, giving the senior three goals on the season which ties her with fellow senior
Natalie Royaards for the team lead. Thomas' three goals and assist from last week earned her Big South Attacking Player of the Week honors.
