- Eagles came out pressuring the VMI defense from the start with four shots in the first 9:05 of the match
- Jordan Walshaw nearly gave the Eagles an early lead in the 4th minute when his shot was off the crossbar
- Andres Carvajal tested the goalkeeper 20 seconds later as his shot was stopped by Broden Schull
- Winthrop nearly broke through again in the 21st minute as Michael Smith got on the end of a free kick but his header around the six-yard box sailed over the bar
- In the 29th minute freshman Daniel Vicaria Barker got the Eagles on the board when he redirected a free kick from Walshaw into the back of the net
- In the 38th minute Walshaw was on the other end of a Winthrop goal for a 2-0 lead
- Cameron Thayer slipped a ball to Walshaw in front of goal as he slotted the ball into the lower right corner from about 10 yards away
- Eagles finished the game with a 17-9 advantage in shots
Notables
- The Eagles are now 15-0-2 all-time against the Keydets and have won eight straight meetings
- This was the second straight year the Eagles recorded a shutout in their season opener
- It is the first time since the 2014 season the Eagles opened a season with a road win
- Chandler Gaunce made one save to earn the shutout in goal, his second career clean sheet with the Eagles
