ROCK HILL, SC – Two second-half goals propelled the Davidson Wildcats to a 2-0 victory over the Winthrop women's soccer team Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.
Winthrop falls to 0-1 with the season-opening loss while the Wildcats improve to 2-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both the Eagles and Wildcats had header opportunities on goal in the opening two minutes but both were saved. Winthrop had a spell of opportunities just over 15 minute into the half but each chance went wide of the goal. The Eagles outshot Davidson 5-3 in the first half with both teams having two shots on target.
Winthrop had a number of opportunities early in the second half, registering five shots in the opening 12 minutes of the period.
As the game rolled into the 60
th minute, Davidson started to put more chances on goal and broke through in the 73
rd minute as Sabine Chandler ripped a shot from the right corner of the penalty area into the left side netting. The Wildcats added an insurance goal in the 84
th minute as Hailey Braemer got behind the Winthrop defense and received a through ball from Rachel Schleicher and pushed it to the far side past the keeper.

Natalie Royaards led the Eagles with five shots on the afternoon while
Allie Thomas registered three with two going on frame.
Gabi Hull registered the other shot on goal for the Eagles.
Ashlynn Harris finished with three saves.
