Eagles Take Series Opener, Doubleheader To Be Played Saturday

CLINTON, SC - Winthrop used another solid start by Zach Peek and timely offense to top Presbyterian 5-3 on Friday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. With the win, the Eagles improve to 26-16 on the season and 13-6 in Big South play and the Blue Hose drop to 21-24 overall on the year and 11-8 in Big South competition.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Zach Peek gave the Eagles 6.2 solid innings of three-run ball on Friday afternoon. Peek scattered six hits and surrended three runs (all earned) but had his power stuff working, striking out nine Presbyterian hitters and walking only one on 96 pitches. Peek was the winning pitcher for the Eagles, improving to 6-2 on the season.

- Jason Crumley came on and got the final out of the seventh and then the first out of the eighth inning, for an outing of 0.2 shutout innings, allowing one hit. Dalton Whitaker then came on and got the final two outs of the eighth inning, extending his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 10.1 innings. Colten Rendon came on for the ninth and threw a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to earn his fifth save and extend his own scoreless innings streak to 10.2 straight frames.

- Trailing 1-0 going into the top of the third inning, Winthrop jumped out for three runs in the inning off of four hits. After Scout McFalls and Alex Raines singled to start the inning, Spencer Yankle knocked a single off the left field wall and advanced to second on the throw, scoring McFalls to get the Eagles on the board. Hunter Lipscomb the grounded out to second base to bring Raines in from third to make it 2-1 Winthrop. The third run of the inning scored when Grant English lined a single up the middle, scoring Yankle from third base.

- After PC tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs, the Eagles retook the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning when Grant English hit his fourth home run of the year, a two-run shot to right field from the left side of the plate.

NOTABLES

- The Eagles were led offensively by Grant English's 2-4 game including a home run, 3 RBI and a run scored. Winthrop also got multi hit efforts from Spencer Yankle (2-4, RBI, R), Jake Sullivan (2-4) and Tyler Baker (2-4).

UP NEXT: The Eagles and Blue Hose will conclude the series Saturday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Both contests will be nine innings and there will be a 45 minute break in between games.
