Eagles Fall To Campbell, To Play In Friday Night Elimination Game

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Campbell jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Winthrop after one inning and the Eagles spent Friday afternoon playing from behind, eventually falling 13-5 to the top-seeded Camels to be forced into the losers' bracket. The Eagles will play again Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Segra Stadium against either High Point or Radford, depending upon the winner of the Panthers and Highlanders' 4 p.m. matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Thad Harris got the start for the Eagles and was roughed up in the first inning, allowing five Campbell runs on five hits, including two home runs. The left hander however settled in nicely following the opening frame, tossing four straight scoreless innings before allowing two runs in the sixth and a leadoff home run in the seventh to close his day. Harris finished his outing with 6.0 plus innings, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits, striking out three and walking one.

- Dalton Whitaker entered with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh with the Eagles trailing 8-5 following a Campbell leadoff homer and escaped the inning allowing no further damage. Whitaker did not fare as well in the eighth inning, yielding five earned runs on four hits with one walk without recording an out in the inning. Macklin Ohs came out of the bullpen and got the Eagles out of the inning, allowing three inherited runners to score but none of his own in his inning of work.

- Offensively, the Eagles got on the board with three runs in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Spencer Yankle hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Brandon Fite from third base and get Winthrop in the scoring column. Two batters later, Grant English drew a walk with the bases loaded to force in Scout McFalls for the Eagles' second run. Following a pitching change, Matthew Mulkey hit a hard grounder to shortstop but the throw to third to get the forceout was wide, allowing Alex Raines to score the uneanred run to make it a 5-3 game.

- Winthrop added a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to one at 5-4 when Alex Raines hit a single to left center field with two outs, allowing Tyler Baker to cross the plate.

- After Campbell plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend the Camel lead to 7-4, the Eagles plated their final run of the ballgame in the top of the seventh when Brandon Fite hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Hunter Lipscomb on the play to make it a 7-5 game. Campbell would go on to score six unanswered runs to put the game out of reach, giving the Camels a 13-5 win and a spot in Saturday's Championship Game.

NOTABLES

- Alex Raines led the Eagles with a 3-5 performance in Friday afternoon's ballgame, including an RBI and a run scored.
