Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting Lead Eagles To Doubleheader Sweep Tuesday Evening

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop softball earned a doubleheader sweep of Presbyterian College with wins of 2-0 and 9-5, Tuesday evening at Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Madyson Watson held the Blue Hose to just four hits as she recorded her first career complete game shutout as she issued no walks and had seven strikeouts while improving to 9-3 on the year
  • Eagles scored both runs in the bottom of the second inning as Tori Walker hit a one out, two-run homerun to left
  • Watson retired the PC batters in order over the final three innings to secure the win and the shutout
Game 2
  • PC scored in the top of the first as Jonnie Petree led off the game with an infield single and then stole second
  • Petree moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kiley Kross
  • Winthrop took a 2-1 lead in the second by showing patience at the plate
  • The Eagles drew back-to-back walks with one out and then Kiley Majette singled down the left field line to tie the game
  • Logan Webb drew a two-out walk to load the bases and then Blake Wallert was hit by a pitch to score Walker for a 2-1 lead
  • Keleigh Romine doubled with one out and later scored from third on an infield single by Walker for a two-run lead
  • Eagles added two more runs in the fourth inning as Webb led off the inning with a homerun to left
  • Brooke Ellison put the Eagles on top 5-1 with an RBI single up the middle that scored Ashley Westbrooks from second base
  • Leading 5-2 in the 5th the Eagles were nearly able to end the game early
  • Majette walked to lead off the inning and after an Ansley Gilreath ground out Webb and Wallert both walked to load the bases
  • Morgan Lowers just missed a grand slam as she doubled off the fence in right field for a 7-2 lead
  • PC added two more runs in the sixth on a two-run homerun by Casey Gerhard to center field and an RBI single from Ansley Wilbanks in the seventh
  • Majette earned the win to improve to 5-11 on the year as Watson entered the game in the seventh to record the last out for her first career save
EXTRA BASES
  • In the two games combined the Eagles drew 11 walks and here hit by a pitch four times
  • Westbrooks pushed her streak of reaching base to 13 games
  • Lowers inched closer to 200 career hits as she now has 193, three behind Laura Hill for 9th place all-time
  • The two RBI in the second game gives Lowers 20 on the year, which is her second time driving in 20 or more in a single-season in her career
  • With Walker's three RBI on the day, the Eagles now have seven players with 15 or more RBI on the season
  • The Eagles have now won four straight home games, all four coming against league opponents
ON DECK
The two teams close out the three-game series on Wednesday, Apr. 10 at 6 p.m. as the Eagles look for their first conference series sweep since sweeping Longwood at home in 2017.
