Eagles Edged 4-3 By Tenth-Ranked NC State

Soloveva posts second win over nationally ranked opponent.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Winthrop women's tennis (12-7) fell just short in a three-hour-plus road match at No. 10 NC State (21-4) Sunday evening as the Wolfpack held on for a 4-3 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Winthrop got off to a strong start taking the doubles point. NC State opened with a 6-4 win at court two as Claudia Wiktorin and Adriana Reami topped Alisa Soloveva and Rafaela Santos, but the Eagles answered with a win at the third position. Ellie Burns and Tayla Van Eck improved to 12-5 on the season as they defeated Liz Norman and Bianca Moldovan 6-3.

-The doubles decision would come down to a tightly fought match at court one between the two squads' nationally ranked duos. Winthrop's No. 56 Megan Kauffman and Lauren Proctor earned the 7-5 win over No. 9 Anna Rogers and Alana Smith to secure the team doubles point.

-NC State grabbed a 2-1 lead with the first two singles victories of the day. No. 112 Reami defeated Kauffman at the third position and at the first position, in a match-up of nationally ranked players, State's No. 15 Rogers held off Winthrop's No. 51 Proctor in a 6-3, 6-4 win.

-Santos evened the score at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 win at court four over Norman, improving to 12-6 on the season.

-Soloveva's 16th-straight singles win put the Eagles on top 3-2 as she topped No. 75 Alana Smith 7-5, 7-6.

-The final two courts would be decided in three-set battles. The Wolfpack tied the match again at 3-3 as Moldovan defeated Van Eck at court five, bringing the team match decision down to the result at court six.

-Burns downed State's Amanda Rebol 6-2 in her opening set, but a fresh Rebol would bounce back for a 6-4 second set win and pull ahead with the match decision in the balance for the 6-3 third set win.

NOTABLES
-Soloveva extended her winning streak to 16-consecutive matches and improved to 2-0 on the season in matches against nationally ranked players.
