UNDEFEATED: Women's Tennis Caps Off 9-0 Big South Regular Season With Win At Charleston Southern

Win marks program's 20th all-time regular season Big South championship

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Winthrop women's tennis (13-7, 9-0 Big South) capped off an undefeated league season with a 6-1 road win over Charleston Southern (8-10, 5-4 Big South) Wednesday afternoon at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex. With the win the Eagles secured the program's 20th all-time regular season Big South Conference championship outright.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Eagles got off to a strong start, winning the doubles point for the 12th time this season with victories on courts one and three. No. 56 Megan Kauffman and Lauren Proctor won their fifth-consecutive conference doubles match, defeating Madalina Man and Tiffany Pyritz 6-3. Tayla Van Eck and Ellie Burns clinched the point with a 6-2 win over Yana Morar and Femcke Van Rensburg.

-In singles play, Alisa Soloveva continued her steamroll, posting a 6-3, 6-0 win over Filippa Ericson to complete an undefeated Big South season and put the Eagles up 2-0.

-No. 51 Proctor downed Man, who had been surging in recent weeks, at the No. 1 position, putting a bow on an undefeated league season with all her wins coming in straight-sets.

-Kauffman clinched team victory for the Eagles with a tough win over Michelle Schmitz at the third position. The senior bounced back from down 4-5 to take a 7-6 tiebreaker win in the first set, then didn't look back for a 6-3 second set and match win.

-At the fourth position, Rafaela Santos fell behind early and was topped 6-3 in the first set, but roared back for a 5-2 lead and a 6-3 second set win over Morar. With all the momentum, Santos stormed through the third set for a 6-0 win and a 5-0 team lead.

-Burns would also find herself pushed to three sets as Kimberley Koerner answered Burns' 6-2 first set with a 6-4 second set win. Burns righted the ship in the third, getting out to a 5-2 lead, then securing a 6-3 win for a 6-0 team score.

-CSU got on the board with a win on the final court in action as Pyritz outlasted Van Eck in three sets at No. 5. Van Eck cruised to a 6-2 first set victory and was ahead 4-3 in the second when Pyritz rattled off three games in a row for a 6-4 win. Pyritz maintained control in the third, taking a 6-3 set and the match win.

-With last season's 8-0 Big South record, Winthrop has posted back-to-back undefeated conference seasons for the first since 2012-13. Those Eagle squads also went 8-0 (2012) and 9-0 (2013).
