Lauren Morris Lifts Eagles To 14-13 Overtime Victory Over Gardner-Webb Saturday

ROCK HILL, SCLauren Morris netted the game-winner in overtime Saturday as the Winthrop lacrosse team won its second straight overtime contest, 14-13, over the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs at Eagle Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Gardner-Webb (5-8, 0-3) raced out to a three-goal lead in the first 2:27 of the contest.  The Eagles stopped the Bulldog run, scoring back-to-back goals to pull within 3-2.  Gardner-Webb then scored three of the next four goals to go up 6-3 with 18:52 left in the half.

Winthrop (5-8, 2-0) responded with three unanswered goals and extended its run to 5-1 to take its first lead of the game at 8-7 with 6:23 remaining.  The Eagles were kept off the board for the remainder of the half as the Bulldogs tallied the last two goals, taking a 9-8 lead into halftime.

Scoring slowed in the second half but Winthrop was able to grab the first two goals of the period to regain a 10-9 lead.  The Bulldogs were able to tie the game 10 minutes into the half.  After more than five scoreless minutes, the Eagles regained a one-goal edge.  Gardner-Webb tied the game at 11-11 with 11:47 remaining and took a 12-11 lead just over a minute later.

Winthrop battled to tie the game at 12-12 with 7:21 on the clock and just less than three minutes later took a 13-12 advantage.  With 3:18 on the clock the Bulldogs tied the game at 13-13.  In the final two minutes Winthrop held possession and got a shot off that was saved.  Gardner-Webb brought the ball down and had an opportunity at the buzzer that clanged off the cross bar to send the game into overtime.

The Eagles won the opening draw of overtime and despite a couple opportunities couldn't put a goal in.  Gardner-Webb turned the ball over on its possession and Winthrop raced down the field.  Out of the defensive third, the ball came to McKenna Blick who fed the ball forward to Mia Creighton.  Creighton was challenged by the Gardner-Webb goalie and dished the ball across to Lauren Morris who hit the open net for the victory.
