Lowers Moves To 10th All-Time At Winthrop In Hits, Eagles Earn Doubleheader Split At Radford

RADFORD, VA— Winthrop earned a doubleheader split at Radford Saturday afternoon with a 10-5 win in 11 innings and an 8-0 loss in five innings.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • For the second game in a row the Eagles jumped on the Highlanders in the first inning for an early lead
  • Morgan Lowers had a one-out double to get things going followed by an infield single from Ashley Westbrooks
  • Keleigh Romine stepped in and singled to left center for a 1-0 lead
  • Two batters later Tori Walker singled up the middle as Westbrooks scored from second for a 2-0 lead
  • Radford got one run back in the bottom of the first as Sydney Fisher and Hannah Medlam opened the frame with back-to-back singles
  • Two batters later Fisher scored on a squeeze bunt from Talia Douglas
  • Highlanders grabbed their first lead in the bottom of the second as they got things going with two outs
  • With a runner on first and two away, Fisher hit a flare into left center for a single followed by a two-run triple by Medlam
  • Lowers gave a diving effort to catch the line shot by Medlam but the ball was just out of reach
  • Radford doubled its lead in the third inning as Maggie Rowe hit a solo homerun to center
  • Kiley Majette looked like she made a good pitch up and away on an 0-2 count by Rowe was able to get the bat extended as the ball just made it over the fence and the glove of Lowers as she leaped up trying to make the catch
  • Eagles tied the game in the top of the fifth inning as Wallert and Lowers hit back-to-back singles to start the inning
  • Westbrooks sacrificed the runners over and Romine ripped a single up the middle, scoring both Wallert and Lowers to tie the game
  • Radford came right back to reclaim the lead as Hunter Mundy provided a two-out RBI single to left, scoring Douglas from third
  • With two outs in the top of the seventh, Westbrooks took an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left to tie the game
  • Eagles had a good chance to grab the lead in the top of the ninth as Lowers led off with a double followed by a double from Westbrooks but Lowers was thrown out at the plate on a close play
  • In the 10th Taylor Charlton walked with one out followed by a single to right by Watson to get a runner in scoring position
  • After A.G. Gardner struck out swinging for the second out, Wallert battled through a 12 pitch at-bat before lining out to left field
  • Winthrop scored five runs in the 11th inning to earn the win
  • Lowers led off with a single down the left field line followed by a Westbrooks single to right center to put runners at the corners
  • Westbrooks stole second to get two runners in scoring position as Romine delivered once again with a single to right to score Lowers and give the Eagles the lead
  • Tori Walker gave the Eagles a three run lead with a two-run double down the left field line and two batters later Madyson Watson doubled home Walker for a 9-5 lead
  • Wallert singled to center to score Watson for a five run cushion
  • Watson earned the win as she tossed seven innings of relief allowing no runs on five hits and is now 8-3 on the year and 4-0 in league play
  • Westbrooks and Lowers both finished with four hits in the game while Wallert, Romine and Walker each had three hits
Game 2
  • Highlanders struck first in the bottom of the second as Mundy hit a two-out solo homerun to right center
  • Radford added five more runs in the third inning as they took advantage of four walks, a hit-by-pitch and throwing error by the Eagles
  • Sofia Tapia had a two-run single to make it 4-0 and then a single to third by Ellie Rowe scored Maggie Rowe from third and a throwing error allowed another to score for a 6-0 lead
  • Douglas had a two-run single in the 5th to make it 8-0
EXTRA BASES
  • The first game was the longest games the Eagles have been involved in since they earned a 4-3 win in 11 innings over Gardner-Webb on Apr. 1, 2015
  • The 21 hits were the most by a Winthrop team since the 2002 team had 19 at Charleston Southern in a 12-1 win
  • Eagles scored 10 or more runs in back-to-back games for the first time since Mar. 15-16, 2008 (Scored 11 Friday evening, 10 in the first game on Saturday)
  • Lowers set a career-high for hits in a game with four in the first game of the doubleheader and now has 191 career hits, which ranks 10th all-time
  • Westbrooks moved into 25th on Winthrop's all-time list for career hits with 138 and has now reached base in 11 consecutive games
  • Westbrooks finished the three-game series 7-for-11 at the plate while Lowers was 7-for-12
  • Wallert tied her career-high for hits in a game with three and also reach 100 career hits in the first game as she now has 102
  • In the first game of the day Wallert extended her career-best hitting streak to eight games
  • Romine's consecutive games reaching base streak came to an end at 11 games
  • In the three game series the team's combined for 71 hits and 46 runs

Eagles return home for a three-game Big South Conference series as they'll host Presbyterian College for a doubleheader on Tuesday, Apr. 9 at 4 p.m. with a single-game on Wednesday, Apr. 10 at 6 p.m.
