RADFORD, VA— Winthrop suffered a 12-11 loss in a walk-off two-run error in the opening game of a series at Radford, Friday evening in Big South Conference softball action.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Eagles struck first as Morgan Lowers got things going with one out
- Ashley Westbrooks singled to put runners at first and second and then Brooke Ellison walked on a full count to load them up
- Taylor Charlton stepped up and was hit on the first pitch to score Lowers from third
- Highlanders tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second as Maggie Rowe led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a 1-out double from Hunter Mundy
- Rowe came home on a single through the left side by Ellie Rowe
- Highlanders took a 2-1 lead in the third as Talia Douglas hit a solo homerun to left center
- Keleigh Romine reached with two outs to keep the 4th inning alive and then Madyson Watson drew a full count walk
- Blake Wallert stepped up and hit a three-run homerun to center for a 4-2 lead
- Radford tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run homerun in the fifth off the bat of Destiny Freeman
- Tori Walker reached on an error to lead off the sixth and the Eagles took full advantage
- Romine and Watson were each hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs and then Wallert was hit to put the Eagles back in the lead at 5-4
- Morgan Lowers put the Eagles up 6-4 with a single through the left side and then two batters later Ansley Gilreath walked for a 7-4 lead
- Brooke Ellison stepped in and hit a 1-2 pitch over the center field fence for a grand slam and an 11-4 lead
- Radford fought right back, taking advantage of two errors that led to the first run of the inning
- The Highlanders scored five runs (three unearned) on five hits in the 6th inning alone
- Munday led off the bottom of the 7th with a solo homerun to right field
- The Highlanders won on a two-out fielding error by Ellison that allowed two runs to score
EXTRA BASES
- This is the second straight meeting in the series that Radford won with a walk-off
- Eagles scored 10 or more runs in a conference game for the first time this season and for the fourth time overall this year
- Radford entered the game with the second-best ERA in the league at 3.16 allowing four runs a game but the Eagles put up 11
- The 12 runs allowed by the Eagles were more than the previous four games combined as Winthrop pitching allowed just six runs over that stretch
- Wallert extended her hitting streak to seven games while Ellison extended hers to six straight
- Romine has now reached base in 10 straight games while Wallert and Westbrooks have reached in nine straight
- The grand slam for Ellison was just her second career homerun
- Morgan Lowers had two hits in the game and now has 186 in her career
