ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop softball fell 5-2 in the opening game of the series with USC Upstate while the second game was halted due to heavy rainfall, Saturday afternoon at Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Upstate grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Brittany Case and Megan Obier led things off with back-to-back singles
- After a ground out moved the runners over, Kristen Wright singled up the middle to score Case from third
- Three batters later Price walked with the bases loaded for a 2-0 lead
- Upstate manufactured a run in the third and tacked on another in the fourth inning on an error
- Trailing 5-0 in the sixth, the Eagles were able to cut into the deficit
- Blake Wallert led off the inning with a walk followed by a single to left by Morgan Lowers
- Two batters later, Keleigh Romine singled to left center, scoring Wallert
- Lowers eventually scored on a wild pitch for the second run
- Christina Biggerstaff earned the win allowing two runs on two hits with four walks and seven strikeouts and is now 24-3 on the year
- Kiley Majette took the loss falling to 6-12 after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits with five walks and nine strikeouts
Game 2
- Halted for rainfall in the top of the sixth inning, game will resume at 4 p.m. on Monday, Apr. 22 with game three of the series to follow
EXTRA BASES
- The Eagles honored their six seniors between games (Jill Derrick, Brooke Ellison, Morgan Lowers, Kiley Majette, Keleigh Romine and Blake Wallert)
- Winthrop had won five straight at home against league opponents
- Lowers single in the sixth was the 200th of her career as she becomes the 8th player in program history to reach 200 hits in a career
- Ashley Westbrooks reached base for the 19th straight game when she walked in the first inning
- The nine strikeouts for Majette was a season-high as her previous best was eight against Gardner-Webb, Massachusetts and Savannah State

Winthrop and USC Upstate will resume the second game at Terry Field on Monday, Apr. 22 at 4 p.m. and the final game of the series will take place approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of game two.
